The State Supreme Court of Montana has apparently decided to have their state join Oregon and Washington in going along with the whole “assisted suicide” rouse that Kevorkian and his henchmen started back in the day. “Assisted suicide” is a nonsensical oxymoron since suicide by definition involves ONE person. “Sui-“ being oneself and “-cide” being killing. Killing oneself. Suicide is an act taken by an individual. Simple logic shows therefore that assisted suicide is not suicide at all, but homicide.
I’ve heard the argument that people make about sick people wanting to “end their life with dignity.” The fact is that suicide is an irrational decision no matter what the circumstances. Everyone who survives suicide attempts goes on to realize that their action would have been an awful mistake if successful. It is an emotional impulse decision made by people at the most pathetic times in the lowest of spirits. There is ALWAYS something new to live for. People who commit suicide are losers who quit the game of life.
Albert Einstein said “Nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and the law of the land than passing laws which cannot be enforced.” Indeed it is hard to picture how one would go about enforcing a law against suicide when the offender is by definition is dead following the crime. And if there is anything even harder than that it is arguing with Einstein. Nevertheless, while other laws that the government cannot properly enforce against victimless crimes are destructive because they create a new network of criminal activity and breed disrespect for the law, that is not the case with suicide because suicide is not a common temptation, as opposed to drinking alcohol during prohibition. The law serves a more symbolic purpose of disapproval. America is a success-driven, optimistic, rags-to-riches society and suicide runs contrary to that spirit. Unfortunately people can still commit suicide without the approval of the law. The government is not going to prevent the depressed or terminally ill from taking a shotgun to their face. However, the people who commit suicide do not have the right to the sanction and approval of other members of our nation. They’re bums looking for a handout of convenience when they should be rising up and conquering their negative energy and living life.
Here’s a quote from the article I linked to above:
“In physician aid in dying, the patient, not the physician, commits the final death-causing act by self-administering a lethal dose of medicine,” Justice William Leaphart wrote for the court.
Notice that the justice twisted the truth in his final verdict on “aid in dying.” He says that the patient is the one who commits the act while the doctor only provides “aid in dying.” In other crimes though, this logic is not relevant. Assisting in murder or robbery is aiding and abiding. That is just as prosecutable as the actual crime itself. So it does not matter whether or not the doctor actually commits the act. Its accessory to a crime and therefore a crime in and of itself. And that phrase he used – “aid in dying” – really bugs me. So this is “aid in dying” we’re talking about, eh? That kind of softened rhetoric makes the issue seem a lot less severe. Sure, just call any form of homicide “aid in dying.” Just call theft “aid in giving.” Just call rape “aid in penetration.” This kind of politically correct dialect is thrown around to make things seems tolerable so that we can be a more tolerant society. What some people fail to get is that some things are not meant to be tolerated. Being tolerant is not always a good thing. Sometimes there is a time to be intolerant. Like this one. I am INTOLERANT of suicide. And a change in the law which creates tolerance for suicide should be vehemently opposed. If the door is left open, people are only going to become more complacent and loose over time. If you get to that low point where you contemplate suicide, would you rather have an environment which eggs you on or one that shakes some sense into you? I’ve already made up my mind about that one.
