New Decade’s Resolution: Overturn Roe

4 01 2010

So the New Year is finally here.  Everybody marks the occasion in their own way.  I myself went to a comedy club down in Stratford to see Rich Vos, who placed third in the 2003 Season of Last Comic Standing.  Others may celebrate with the traditional champagne party or perhaps the more simple watching the ball drop.  And, as usual, people like to make New Year’s resolutions.  I myself made a couple.  But don’t forget that this year – 2010 – is also the start of a brand new decade:  the 2010s.  So this brings about the rare opportunity to make not just a New Year’s resolution, but a New Decade’s resolution.  A New Decade’s resolution can be considerably more ambitious than an ordinary New Year’s resolution.  And I’m making a really ambitious one.  It’s not one I would hope to accomplish alone.  Anyone and everyone who holds Common Sense and a good conscience is invited to join in and call the resolution their own.  Here it is:  strike down that abomination of a Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade once and for all!

This of course is the case which enabled seven activist judges to legalize the horror of abortion throughout the United States.  It was decided in 1973 along with its companion case Doe v. Bolton.  Since then nearly 50 million babies have been ruthlessly murdered.  Barack Obama recently became inaugurated the eighth President under which this has been held the law of the land.  With over a million dying every year because of this precedent, I strongly believe that it has been around long enough!

Unfortunately some people – even those with Common Sense who stand on the right side of this ever-critical issue – would call this goal unrealistic and may even call me counterproductive for stating it.  That is completely flat-out wrong.  Ending Roe in the 2010s is totally realistic.  In order to overturn Roe, we need no Congressmen.  We do not need billions of dollars.  We do not need to win any elections or the support of any interest groups.  We do not even need the President to sign any law.  All that is necessary if five Supreme Court justices.  The highest court of the land decides cases through a simple majority.  Therefore, five out of nine is all the magic number.  In fact, there are already four justices friendly to the cause.  Therefore…we only need ONE.  One Supreme Court justice more and all the difference is made.  If the last presidential election had turned out differently we would be well on our way.

Sadly, I have sensed that a lot of those on the side of life have grown pessimistic and disillusioned by the lack of real tangible success in the past 37 years.  They may still not be convinced that this goal is attainable.  If you count yourself among their number then ask yourself:  if not in the next ten years, when?  It’s already been 37.  The anniversary is in a few weeks.  If you don’t want to go for repealing Roe by 2020, will you say 2030?  2040?  2050?  Don’t forget that over a million die a year until the precedent is finally reversed.  Every decade it stays on the books, 10 million more will die.  How many will those who claim to be righteous allow to die before the “opportune moment?”  When you set a goal, is it guaranteed?  No, but fear of failure is no excuse not to go for something.

The timing may never be ideal, but the timing now is pretty darn good.  We now have the most pro-abortion president in history on our hands who has tried ever-so uncouthly to disguise himself as a moderate.  This has been a wake-up call for many pro-lifers and I have witnessed a new energy behind the movement which was not there before.  Now, for the first time in recent memory, more Americans identify themselves as “pro-life” then “pro-choice.”  Even if this new pro-abortion president is reelected 2012, there is still another chance to get a more life-friendly alternative in the White House in 2016, well before the end of the decade with plenty of time to appoint more strict constructionist judges.  Plus, there is a new and growing Tenth Amendment movement, which is in favor of state’s rights and is a natural ally to pro-lifers, since Roe is also an affront to state and local sovereignty.  If the pro-life movement knows how to play the political forecasts right, we are going to see more great events in the near future.

The 37th anniversary of Roe is coming up.  I have not even been alive for the whole time that it’s been around and already I have had enough of it.  I do not want to wait ten years more for it to be over.  It may not seem like the right time to predict the reversal of Roe within ten years.  But ask yourself.  Could you have predicted the American Declaration of Independence from 1766?  Could you have predicted the end of slavery from 1855?  The repeal of prohibition from 1923?  The fall of the Soviet Union from 1981?  Perhaps not.  Neither should it be the same with this new landmark.  The end of Roe will by no means be the end of the battle over abortion.  It will only be the beginning of a new phase of fighting for life in individual states.  But it will be a huge step in the right direction.  Now, in 2010 – the die is cast.

I think your only shot is a Constitutional Amendment. That also gives us time, as there is no expiration on the ratification process. It might take a while, but once a state ratifies it, it’s ratified for all time. Then, it’s just a question of timing your state votes.
