Now That’s Good Parenting

26 12 2009

There are all too many parents these days who have panzied out of giving their children real disciplines and truthful quality lessons on life.  This mother from Ohio is not one of those.  She doesn’t spoil her kids.  She does not even bat an eye about punishing them adequately when they mess up so that they never do it again.  I have high hopes for her kids.

This reminds me of a movie – can’t remember the name – where a man talks about how he stole something from a market when he was a kid.  His father threw him in the cellar for three days to show him what a life of crime was like.  After that, the boy would be able to make his own decision.  Did he steal again?  Nope.  Here’s to parents who don’t panz out.  God knows we need more of them today.

Conventional Wisdom may make it seem that the mother over reacted.  Think about it this way:  that little brat will not ever have the thought of shoplifting cross her mind again as long as her mom’s on the case.  The kid is unscathed and a very strong valuable lesson about the morals of stealing has been taught in a way that will not soon be forgotten.  This mommy deserves a medal!

Happy Bernie Goetz Day!

22 12 2009

T’is the season to be jolly – also known as the holiday season.  Around this time of year we got it pretty packed.  There’s Hanukkah, Kwanza, New Years and, naturally, Christmas.  The Christmas season is a time of many days celebrations – especially if you factor in the fact that many people open their actual presents on Christmas and many start up early on Christmas Eve.  In the holiday spirit of this time of year, I think that it is appropriate that we add one to their number.  This would be December 22nd – Bernie Goetz Day, to commemorate the events of exactly 25 years ago today in New York City by a courageous individual.

On the afternoon of Saturday, December 22nd, 1984 on a subway line in Manhattan, four young adult delinquents cornered Mr. Goetz and attempted to mug him.  This was during an era where the crime rate in New York City was far above its current rate and in a time where most citizens probably would have considered themselves cornered, Goetz decided that he was going to be a man and refuse to pander to the filthy crooks and degenerates that run wild on the streets.  He made a quick calculation of action and proceeded to shoot the four criminals into incapacitation.  Goetz gained a great deal of media attention in the month following the events of Saturday, December 22nd.  The press often described his actions as vigilantism, even though they can much more accurately be described as self-defense. RIP Brittany Murphy

20 12 2009

Wow.  Was NOT expecting that one.  I just saw the story on Yahoo.  I didn’t bother to see most of her major movies – Clueless is the best one I can remember.  I watched that with a friend shortly after it came out.  Apparently she was also the voice of Luanne on King of the Hill, but I was not aware of that until I looked it up.

Don’t Throw Out the Puppy with the Bathwater

Simple Common Sense:  if there is a problem going on, you should take the best steps necessary to fix it and you should not burden yourself more than is sufficient.  That probably sounds reasonable to pretty much everyone.  You would think that this is both “Common” Sense and Conventional Wisdom.  However, people often find it hard to embody their God-given ability to use Common Sense in practice.  You see, my engineer friend works at DEKA up near Manchester.  They’re a pretty large company with a couple hundred employees.  They used to have a policy where employees could bring dogs to work as long as they tied them up while they were not around.  However, one employee took advantage by bringing in a show dog, which they refused to leave alone.  They would ask other employees to watch the dog while they were away from their post.  Then when people contacted those employees asking for something like a report, they would have to say “I can’t – I’m watching so-and-sos dog.”  Needless to say, the executives banned dogs from the office through frustrated Conventional Wisdom.  Common Sense would have said “don’t ban ALL dogs, just THAT one.”  Tell the employee to suck it up and leave the dog alone without burdening their coworkers or just tell them they can’t bring their dog to the office anymore.  A little good discrimination can go a long way in not ruining things for the rest of us.  What about the other employees used to bringing in their dogs?  I guess they have to leave them at home now or worse, pay for a day-sitter.  All because of the joint efforts of some quack with a show dog and hasty impulsive top-downers.

Palin Praising Obama and Digging Grave

14 12 2009

http://www.politicsdaily.com/2009/12/11/sarah-palin-praises-obamas-nobel-acceptance-speech/

I think it’s pretty much Common Sense that Obama did NOT deserve the Nobel Peace Prize.  He himself seemed somewhat embarassed.  Even the proponents cited the fact that he was President Bush’s immediate successor as the key reason instead of anything Mr. Hope and Change has actually done.  Nevertheless, I have all but digested his award over time.  He’s got the award – it may seem obscene – but time to move on.  I was therefore pleased to see that his potential rival Sarah Palin complemented his speech.  The man is a good speaker, so that’s not too surprising.

What disturbed me was how Palin also praised former President Bush and his foreign policy.  The Tea Party movement, which protests the government’s reckless anti-Common Sense deficit spending, is a thriving grassroots phenomenon which needs leaders and champions in high positions.  Sarah Palin has presented herself as one of those.  However, she seems to forget that the very spending the Tea Party opposes began under President Bush, so alligning herself with him is not the way to get behind the Tea Party movement or get the Tea Party movement behind her.  Palin can’t be pro-Bush and pro-Tea Party.  The best way for Palin and the GOP to regain credibility is to move away from the mistakes of the Bush Administration and start over with REAL fiscal responsibility, not spend-and-spend double-talk.  I only hope that true Tea Party patriots recognize this anomaly and excommunicate her from the movement.

Sorry Sarah, you’ve let us down.  You’re fired.

Knicks Win Three in a Row

8 12 2009

Finally, I can take a look at the top of the Knicks online score sheet and not feel devastated.  They won 114-107 over Atlanta, 106-97 over New Jersey and 93-84 over Portland.  Hopefully they keep it up for when I visit my friend in New York soon.  We’re going to a game!
