Finally Got the “About ” Page Filled In

31 01 2009

I finally got around to filling in the ever-so present “about” page on the top bar of this blog. When I first started Pure Common Sense, I wanted to get started posting right away so that wasn’t a priority for me. I just made it not ten minutes ago. You might find it ironic that I was able to produce dozens of long posts in the months since then but I had not gotten around to filling in a simple “about” form yet. I think I came up with a nice, simple description that gets right to the point:

“My name is Mike Casey. I operate a blog (that’s probably obvious to you already) which is based purely off of Common Sense and common sense-based principles. Hence, the blog is called “Pure Common Sense.” I will post my ramblings on life, politics, religion, pop-culture and current events. You will not find me pulling any punches or putting up with any nonsense of any kind on this blog. I am bluntly honest but also realistically pragmatic and you will find reason in all my posts.”

I Shaved Off My Beard

28 01 2009

Two and a half consecutive years of facial hair for me have now come to an end. I came to the decision a few days ago after watching the Futurama movies – I know, kind of random. So, how is the goatee-free, clean-shaven life treating me? Well, the face is colder, especially during the winter, but I think my mouth is able to emphasize my facial expressions much better than before.

Twilight of the Electoral College

27 01 2009

The 2008 election is already being touted as the election where the first black American president was chosen. That has instantly been inserted into the history books. But will it also be remembered as the last election where the Electoral College was employed? Will 2012 be decided by direct popular vote? I believe the answer to both those questions is a definite yes. You might wonder if this claim of mine is too bold. After all, the Electoral College has been used to choose our president since 1789 and even though 80% of those polled have supported a direct popular vote consistently for the past 50 years the Electoral College is still here. How can I possibly say that it will not be here in another four years? Well, as it so happens there is already a plan in motion to change the law about how we select our president. It does not even require a constitutional amendment.

It is a fascinating tale: how the United States got the system it uses today to choose its chief executive. After all, every other civilized country uses a popular vote to choose its chief executive. We also use a popular vote to elect our senators, congressmen and every state governor. So where did this Electoral College thingy come from? To answer this question, we have to travel back in time to when our Constitution was first conceived. Our framers thought that the general populace was incapable of making an educated decision on who should hold the office of President of the United States. So they explored other options. The original consensus was that Congress should vote on the president every four years. However, one of the delegates eventually brought up the fact that this violated the separation of powers. No Abortions, No Exceptions

26 01 2009

There comes a time when all of us must reevaluate ourselves, our principles and how we lead our lives. On Saturday, January 24th, 2009 between 3 PM and 4 PM I was doing some research and came to the conclusion that one of my long-held beliefs was a falsehood. I used to think abortion should never be allowed except to save the life of the mother. I now think that it should never be allowed. Period. Abortion is awful, gruesome murder and that is why for several years now I have supported a total ban on it, even in cases of rape and incest, because rape and incest do not justify the slaughter of an innocent harmless child. The exception to save the mother’s life has always been a thorn in my side. After all, abortion is one of the most terrible acts ever committed on God’s Green Earth and therefore common sense tells me that it is always horribly, horribly wrong. But if the mother dies, the baby usually does too, so two lives are better than one, but one is still better than none. Therefore, abortion should be fought and outlawed except to save the mother’s life. But abortion is such an abomination that supporting it in any circumstance seems intolerable. Well, finally the thorn in my side has been removed forever and I can finally declare the evil of abortion in all cases.

It does seem to make sense from a Common Sense Pro-Life perspective that abortion to save the life of the mother is somewhat acceptable. After all, like I said before, two lives are better than one, but one is still better than none, right? Well, if a legitimate case arises where the life of the mother is at stake and the willful destruction of her infant is the only available option than this is certainly true. But the question is does this ever really happen? Read the rest of this entry »

Mexico City Policy Nixed

25 01 2009

In the past couple of days, the new president revoked the Mexico City Policy, an act which protected US taxpayer dollars from being used to fund abortion atrocities outside of the United States. This has opened up the door for organizations such as Planned Parenthood and UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) to funnel money from the hard-working American taxpayer. UNFPA has been accused of conducting forced abortions and forced sterilizations in the past. I was right in my last post to say that I would have much to comment on regarding Obama. The population crazies and other supporters of the abortion holocaust have called the policy the “global gag rule” – which is nothing but a bogus propaganda term. The policy is not a gag rule because it does not make the actions of such organizations prohibited (and they should be) but merely makes it so they do not receive funds from decent Americans. There is no right to government funding. The Mexico City Policy is rescinded, but I am hopeful that it will return at a later date. Given the current political trend, it seems to come into effect whenever the president is a Republican and leave whenever the president is a Democrat.

The Inauguration of Barack Obama

24 01 2009

obama_portrait

For the first time, as of the afternoon of Tuesday, January 20th, 2009, we, as Americans, live in the land of a black president. This is undoubtedly an emotional moment for many people. It comes one day after Dr. Martin Luther King Junior’s holiday and I am sure that he would be happy about the milestone. I did not attend the inauguration, but I heard first-hand accounts from people who did. The crowd was massive – I’ve heard various estimates between 1.4 million and 2 million people. This is ten times the maximum capacity of the largest sports arena in the world. There was no shortage of authority figures present to control the crowd as best they could. When Obama first appeared, the noise of the cheer was deafening – imagine the loudest cheer you’ve heard at a pep rally/rock concert/sports match – it’s a lot louder than that. Once he started speaking, a 180 was pulled to the other extreme. Everyone fell so silent you could hear a pin drop. Given the political composition of the crowd, it is not surprising that outgoing President Bush was booed a great deal. After the speech was over, the crowd’s agenda became to exit the area, which was completely blocked off – they were trapped. One exit was guarded by the DC police, another by the Secret Service, another by the FBI, etc. Finally, someone found a secret “exit” behind a port-a-potty (whether it was a legitimate exit or not is highly questionable) and the crowd began funneling through that into the greater DC area. It took some people hours to get on the subway. So goes the first-hand experience not received via television or Youtube. Read the rest of this entry »

In the News Recently:

16 01 2009

Whilst I was surfing the net over the past couple of days, I came across a couple articles that I deemed worthy of being posted on here.

First of all, I found an editorial on “golden parachutes” on the eloquently-written blog, But Now You Know. It explains how these “golden parachutes” are misunderstood. It’s not hard to decipher why people get frustrated with executives at failing corporations raking in massive severance packages while most employees are left to struggle to make ends meet. However, in order for a struggling company to survive, they need good leadership and in this way “golden parachutes” prevent falling companies from going under. Truth be told, it’s a way that “ugly” capitalism helps us all without us knowing about it.

Secondly, I noticed that President-Elect Obama has been busy appointing his administration and while he presents himself as a “uniter and not a divider,” he wastes no opportunity to show his left-wing extremism on issues affecting human life and our judiciary. He appointed Dawn Johnsen, a former NARAL legal director, to serve in the Attorney General’s staff. I do not for a second doubt Obama’s commitment to judicial activism and undermining human life. He has stated before Planned Parenthood that he would sign the Freedom of Choice Act, a blatantly unconstitutional abomination that would undermine state’s rights to regulate abortion and extend more free reign than already exists to the operators of human slaughterhouses we call abortion clinics. When it comes to the Supreme Court, it seems he will appoint three judges to replace Stevens, Ginsburg and Breyer. He won’t gain any ground for the activists since he will be replacing activists with activists, but he will extend their reach for decades. If McCain or Palin had the opportunity to appoint constitutionalist judges to replace the activists, than 50 years of activists Supreme Court cases would have come down like dominoes. Since all the outgoing justices are extreme, there is the hope that the Republicans and moderate Democrats can filibuster Obama into accepting a moderate for one of the seats. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Stringent Toy Regulations May Hurt Already Troubled Economy

9 01 2009

Starting on February 10, 2009 – in a little more than one month – it will become illegal to buy or sell used children’s clothing or toys in the United States. Because of the idiocy of some government bureaucrats who were a little nervous about some lead problems in China. Unless it is tested for lead it is now illegal to sell or re-sell a toy product. It could cost up to $4,000 per item to obtain this testing – paid for by the manufacturer – and small business owners cannot afford to pay such a price. The law is retroactive to every item being sold – not just those made after the date the law comes into effect. It applies to children’s books, toys, clothing and furniture alike. Thousands of businesses will be forced to close under this horrendously stupid law. It is already being called “national bankruptcy day.” Heftier regulations can also make it harder for innovation and competition in a market where just passing regulation standards occupies a substantial portion of one’s startup costs. Hamas’s Latest

7 01 2009

A few days ago Hamas and Israel entered into a state of conflict along the gaza strip.  A previously-negotiated ceasefire between Hamas and Israel drew to a close and four days ago Israel ordered air strikes.  So far much has been damaged, including a university and casualties have been high.  So far, on an international level, various nation-states and entities have either condemned one side, condemned both or remained neutral.

The situation in Israel long predates Hamas to when the state was created 60 years ago.  Many see it as an issue of patriotism.  Many see it as an issue of religion.  Many see it as an issue of Zionism or Imperialism.  Whatever happens now will probably affect the upcoming Israeli election and the style of government that will conduct and negotiate the situation.

As the United States has long been an ally of Israel, this is set to be one of president-elect Obama’s first major challenges once he takes power in a couple weeks.  So far he has not stated a clear position, but that will be more understood as time goes by.

MMORPGs are Evil!

6 01 2009

MMORPGs are Evil.  For those of you who have never heard this acronym, MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.  It is a form of RPG game which utilizes the internet to create a universal network where users interact with each other to meet various objectives.  Many people have been sucked into these virtual monoliths and suffered the consequences in the real world.  I know several people who can count themselves among this unfortunate number.  Examples of MMORPGs include Everquest, World of Warcraft and Second Life.  The way in which people talk about their experiences with these games sickens me.  “It’s awesome.  I go around, I talk to people, I earn money, I buy things.  It’s like having a life!”  Yes, you would like to believe that you have a life behind all this, don’t you?  The name of the popular game Second Life says it all.  If your “second life” – your computer-generated life is going well, you can hide from all the challenges of your first, God-generated life.  How wonderful!

One of the main problems of MMORPGs as opposed to other games is that there is no real end of the game.  There is a vast, unyielding expanse of new quests to explore, new items to obtain and new people to interact with.  When one gets addicted to a MMORPG, it is a tough habit to break.  When someone gets addicted to a normal RPG like Paper Mario or The Legend of Zelda, eventually that person beats all the levels and, if they wish to continue, unlock all the codes.  Once the game is over, they have no choice but to leave the game behind and move on in the real world.  Since addiction becomes more powerful as one continues, it becomes harder to engage in the activity in healthy moderation and easier to become an excessive degenerate.  Some of my friends in the past (no names will be given to preserve their dignity) have failed in work, school and relationships all because of their uncontrollable addiction to these things.
